January 25, 2014

How much spam do you have to wade through as a blogger?

December 28, 2013

I have 201 posts on the blog so far. How much spam has been directed at these 201 posts? Here is the answer from the admin part of my site:

“Akismet has protected your site from 25,896 spam comments already.”

So, we are at nearly 129 spam comments for each post. Without aggressive spam filters and comment-by-comment moderation, this blog would be useless as far as any sort of back-and-forth with the readers.

Any legitimate comments (there have been 163 of them) would be lost in the dumpster overflow from spammers. For every genuine comment from a real person there have been about 161 pieces of spam generated by bots.

Pretty sad, huh. Spammers are like parasites that will greedily kill the host.

UPDATE: I went in to clean out the spam filter today and there were 22 fake spammer comments for this particular post. Oh, the irony.

Horrors from the Spam Filter of Terror: Best fake comments lately

October 27, 2013

NOTE: All that follows are real fake comments from spammers snagged by the spam filters. I am not even showing you the ones that now arrive in Chinese! What is scary is that a lot of this stuff would get through on other sites that operate without spam filters and a moderator. Any links to their websites have been deleted. I left in all of the typos and mangled grammar from the originals, to the retching of my site’s spell-checker. The spammers were hawking everything from illegal movie downloads (The Hunger Games, which spammed me twice) to fake designer watches and (I kid you not) medical images. Note how the first spammer is asking me to post my URLs for LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter on the site. I guess he wants to spam those as well. Anyhow, let the horror show begin!

SPAM STARTS NOW:

I drop a comment when I like a article onn a site or if I have something too contribute to
the discussion. Usually it’s triggered by the passion displayed in the post I read.

Ladies: Would you trust your health and your breasts to this spammer?

May 9, 2013

What follows below is the actual fake comment some spammer of herbal breast enhancement products tried to slither into my blog. The spam filters nailed it, but I found it hilarious and am posting it (minus the spammer links).

Why would ANYONE trust a product bought from a spammer who posted THIS as an enticement?

“Any way I’ll be subscribing to your feed and I hope you post once again soon. I don’t feel I could have put it far better myself. 875926”

OK, so how many of you end a compliment with a string of numbers to try to evade spam filters? Yeah, the comment was obviously fake without the numbers at the end, but at least TRY to appear legit.

Another one had as their sole comment the following: “MAKE MONEY FAST ONLINE!”

Gee, could that be a spammer’s comment?

This is a moderated blog with aggressive spam filters and 100% of comments are approved by the blogger before publication. It is a pointless waste of spammer time to keep submitting bogus comments. Yet, whoever said spammers were smart?

Dumbest fake spammer “comment” lately

December 8, 2011

“I really fondness the matter to you shared. Thank you pro rearrangement.”

This bit of nonsense was posted by Financial Adviser who was pimping his finance advice site. I don’t know if it was a bot trying to fake a post or a spammer whose command of English is not quite up to par. In either case, I found it hilarious.

Even more fun was that this genius attempted to spam it to my post on this being a moderated blog – and all comments are reviewed before posting to weed out spam.
