Watching Michigan die, sadly…

I was born in Michigan and grew up there, graduating from Lansing Eastern High School in 1978. I still have some family up there, but haven’t lived in Michigan for 30 years. Like a lot of others, I fled my beloved home state because I had to make a living.

How bad is it? The Detroit News declares that another family now leaves the state every 12 minutes.

How bad is it: “Since 2001, migration has cost Michigan 465,000 people, the equivalent of the combined populations of Grand Rapids, Warren and Sterling Heights — the state’s second-, third- and fourth-largest cities.”

Worse, the people leaving are the educated and ambitious. They are leaving the high taxation, economic stagnation, and bottom-of-the-barrel business climate for greener pastures. Read the comments on the Detroit News story as those who left and those who plan to leave explain their thinking.

A while back I made a post on a Bethsoft Forum that likened sections of Detroit to the nuclear wastelands of the video game Fallout 3.

I included images from Detroit to make the point that a major American city had managed to destroy itself with no weapons other than government policies.

Michigan has fallen from one of the most dynamic economic producers in the nation to now begging for scraps of federal stimulus money that other states refuse to take. Yet, they keep electing the same folks who presided over their ongoing decline. One likely reason is that those who would have voted against this crop of brain-dead politicos have already voted with their feet and fled.

When I came to Texas in the 1980’s, the joke was: The last one to leave Michigan, please turn out the lights.

It is no longer a joke now. Michigan is losing population fast and those leaving would have been its future.

New York will soon also lose a number of its high-end wage earners as it jacks up the tax rates. Like Michigan, it assumes those who pay will stay in place and open their checkbooks with a smile. Texas will welcome them once they kiss the Big Apple goodbye.

My concern is that our nation now seems poised to try a large dose of the same policies that drove Michigan to the poor house. Look at the images of Detroit and be forewarned.
