Possible fix for RAGE crash on launch within Steam


It appears the Steam crash at launch is triggered by having the default triple buffering enabled in the AMD Catalysts Control Center in the OpenGL settings. See: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=25493732&postcount=33

Here is the fix (high-five to CatatonicMan for posting it):

I fixed the crash after startup by turning off Triple Buffering in Catalyst Control Center.

This is using the RAGE-specific AMD drivers with a pair of HD 4870s in crossfire. It is also repeatable (triple buffering on crashes game; triple buffering off does not).

For me, it is under:

CCC -> Gaming -> 3D Application Settings -> OpenGL Settings -> Triple Buffering

    rage starts ok.but after the intro movie it goes to the last screen again and again in a loop.i hv nvidia 9400gt card.any suggestions pls?

      Sorry, don’t know. However, the Steam forums seem to have a lot of info on what has worked for other people. That is where I found the setting change that let me launch the game.

      No, all I can advise is generic stuff like using the most current drivers and keeping on eye on the Steam Forums. They were where I found the fix to my own issue and their batting average is excellent, likely due to such a large user base. If you do find a fix, send me a link and I will post it.

      go to bios and set the graphics to fixed mode instead of the default set dynamic mode.. run the game on hi-performance and it wl run

    I confess that I don’t know what to do since I haven’t touched Rage in months. I finished it and and then was done with it. I would suggest checking the Steam forums. Let me know if you find the fix.
